The Arvad vineyard was planted on a slope exposed to northerly winds, providing large daily temperature variations. Located on the banks of the Arade River, overlooking Silves, it benefits from a Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence. The vine is trained upwards, with heel pruning, in clay-limestone soils that carry the weight of history.
It was in this region that wine was introduced into Portuguese territory, brought from the East by Phoenician travellers in clay amphorae. Here, in the Silves area, it took root through exchange and discovery, being drunk in rituals as a symbol of civilization.
Later, the Phoenicians taught us how to produce our own wine. They settled on the bank of the River Arade and gave this place the name Arvad, which means “Safe Haven”. Today, the vines that give rise to this wine are planted in that same location. The shape of the Phoenician amphora is represented on the labels of this delicious wine, and the bottles of Negra Mole are encapsulated with a clay mixture, as a tribute to these people.
The Negra Mole grape variety stands out for producing bunches of red grapes, pink in different tones or even white. It is considered “the second oldest in the country (after Cercial)” and presents a unique varietal richness, especially found in old vineyards in Portugal. This particularity reflects the strong connection between wine and Algarve culture, with more than 2000 years of history.
Benefits
Moderate consumption of wine by healthy people is capable of bringing numerous health benefits.
Excessive consumption causes dependence and serious health problems.
Usage suggestions
This single grape variety wine is a surprise on the palate and shows all the elegance of the soft black grape variety, very smooth and medium long.
We suggest that it be served slightly chilled at 12ºC and surprisingly it is ideal to accompany appetizers, salads, baked fish dishes such as a good octopus à lagareiro, Asian food or white meats.
